They come and they go. Sometimes within days. Some even hours. Employees that you thought would retire are suddenly discontent and looking elsewhere. Is the grass really greener at your competitors? Why are people so restless?
If you are an employer you have hopes and dreams of having a successful profitable business where customers are happy and employees are working hard to keep them that way. You want people who are loyal and have great attitudes and are appreciative for the job they have. You have clear job descriptions, consistent polices and no one gets special treatment because that wouldn’t be fair. People need to understand they are replaceable.
Well therein lays the problem. People are viewed as replaceable before they walk in the door. I know this is a shift from the “norm” but I propose the “Paradigm of the Faucet” to remedy the situation. It’s not new really because I think we all know that everyone is uniquely created with different skills, abilities, interests, talents and experiences and I believe because of that uniqueness everyone is irreplaceable if they are in the position and place they are created to offer their life saving drink to the world.
Faucets don’t need to be perfect when you are dying of thirst. They just need to be available and be the right fit for the hardware that the Master Plumber laid out and like the glass slipper there is only one that will fit perfectly. We may need to cleahen they leave if there is no one else that will be a perfect fit for position?? Simple solution (another paradigm shift) you change the position description to match the skills of the new employee who has the core skills needed.
Anything less than this will contribute to the 70% of working people that are actively looking for other jobs and the $299 billion a year on stress related costs that are exacerbated by an organization that isn’t employee centered. Developing a “mental health friendly” workplace is the beginning of an employer’s trek to a thriving and profitable business that will help you live your dreams too. After all, isn’t that what we all want?
If you want to learn more about the solution and how you can be a Faucet of HOPE and offer the Help Opportunity Praise and Encouragement that we all need just go. You will find which direction is a good fit for you, I’m sure of it. Go to our home page to listen to my 4 part video series on the upcoming training.
