I don’t get into debating politics and this isn’t about the Me Too movement but all this talk about sexual assault, drunken parties etc is really sad and brings back a lot of things for me from my past. Hopefully it will have a positive impact on our nation when people see what happens when people drink too much alcohol and the long lasting effects it can have on the course of history.

Unfortunately, none of us really know how much alcohol is too much nor do we have the ability to make reasonable decisions about it once we have gotten there. It is all a crap shoot. It is clear that the “drinking self” may have done things our sober self never would have done. Who knows.

It was my blackouts that led me to the conclusion that I was an alcoholic. I would wake up “somewhere” and not know where I was or how I got there or even more scary, who I was with! Clearly I engaged in behavior that I never would have done in my right and moral mind but everything gets tossed to the wind when you are drunk. It changes us, whether we want to admit it or not.

What is really sad about all this and the men and women who are in jail now and the men and women who will head there in the future is that we don’t have to take the risk of being one of the statistics of doing things that land us in places we don’t want to be because we were drinking or drugging.

We can’t change the past and unfortunately it catches up with us even if we have gotten our lives together, so the best course of action for us now is DON’T TAKE THE RISK! One time of drunk driving and killing someone or doing some other illegal or inappropriate thing can entirely change the course of our lives and everyone we love and care about as well as the rest of the world that depends on us.

The choice is ours. For me….today….I choose sobriety.
