My previous posts included the miracle of Randy Thompson, a Christian Musician, picking up his guitar after several years of silence and playing it again. As his wife Linda uploaded the attached video and several more from that evening where Randy played for nearly 45 minutes, I realized a couple of things that I think are worth consideration.
Everything got started when I “tricked” him into playing by messing up one of his songs and asking him to show me how it was supposed to go. From that point he continued to play the same chord in various picking styles. We realized he had actually written a number of songs to that same chord progression. Linda and I tried to sing some of the songs he had written but it was apparent that he had a new thing going on and it was nothing that he had written before, or at least not that we had heard, so we just decided to do some free worship singing.
1st Observation-As we watched Randy we saw that the more we got to that place where God’s grace is so evident that you can’t NOT break into song, Randy responded with that look on his face that all of us who had seen him in concert could identify. It was that place of holiness where it was Him and God and an anointing was present in a way that changed lives in ways that none of us can explain except it was well…..God, at work in His servant Randy.
We didn’t want it to end but then another miracle happened. If you noticed the quality of Randy’s guitar playing was not up to par at all. He had struggled for that first half hour playing because he will not, nor will he allow anyone else to cut his nails. In fact, his toenails got so long and painful at one point that he could hardly walk so he had to have them surgically removed. He always kept his right hand fingernails long so he could use them as a built in pick for his guitar but his left hand nails were always trimmed so to see and hear him struggle to try play with long nails was juest not Randy.
So then it happened! In the middle of a beautiful tune Randy stopped and put his guitar down in a way that Linda was all to familiar with. She looked at him with her animated childlike way of relating to him these days and said Randy, do you need to clip your nails??? And he said yes…I need to clip my nails….I am going to clip my nails. so she got the nail clipper and Randy clipped his nails and then picked up the guitar and played some more. It was wondrous!!
We have been at the Thompson’s for over a week now and Randy is a joy to be around. He may pace more than most but he is so easy to redirect and he never argues. He may not do something right away, like take a shower, or go to the bathroom or get dressed but he eventually does it. I can get him to pick up the guitar most of the time but he doesn’t play for more than a minute the last few days.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring or how long, or if he will ever play again. I expect he will. It was his life. But what I know for sure is that music, for Randy was his way of leading others to Christ in a way they could understand. He did it for my husband and hundreds if not thousands of others over the years.
Music is a tool of God to bring HOPE to a hurting world and God healed many of us in our darkest times through Randy Thompson. Fortunately, his music lives on and there is much more to come in the future from Randy. His last legacy was a book he wrote about his life up to his diagnosis….Linda is working on the rest of it and it will change your life. Randy’s life and his writing has always challenged us to remember “It’s by Grace We Are Saved” and that we/I owe Jesus “My Everything My All” Thanks Randy for your example and for giving your life that we might see how it is done! I will never be the same!
